Jonas Mekas is the ‘godfather of avant-garde cinema’, and has been making films for fifty years. In Sleepless Nights Stories, he follows some 25 stories from his life with his handheld video camera. He begins his film jet lagged, and meets Marina Abramovic in a cafe. He videos their chat, and that’s the end of that, and on to the next. We see him video youtube videos and film his friends, telling their stories and his own, as he presents us with an extended snapshot of his life.
It’s hard to pinpoint what Sleepless Nights Stories is about because it’s not really about anything. The only recurring icon throughout the different shorts is alcohol; Mekas and his friends are constantly drinking, but it isn’t a film about drinking, nor the pros and cons of being drunk. - Frances Taylor
