"It's the ultimate Dogma movie, before the birth of Dogma."

Jonas Mekas

"At almost five hours, the movie is brief only when compared with Mr. Mekas's 78 years of life.[...] In the first chapter, he says of the blur of images, "The first idea was to keep them chronological, but then I gave up and I just began splicing them together by chance." You can actually hear the cuts as the ambience is abruptly broken up; he wants to remind us of the rough edges and shifts of thought to be found in anyone's diary. There are sudden rises and drops in the aural textures, and bits of music that are flung over the film like sprinkles over a row of cupcakes." Elvis Mitchel, The New York Times, 2001
